These La La Land quotes are for the fools who dream.
Like many people after seeing La La Land for the first time, I was heartbroken but also inspired. It's been a few years since it came out and I wanted to rewatch it - it was just as moving as the first time! Today we'll talk about some of my favorite quotes from the film as well as some of the most frequently asked questions about the movie.
La La Land is about two hopeful dreamers in LA, Mia and Sebastian, who cross paths and help each other fulfill their dreams. Mia dreams of being an actress and Sebastian dreams of opening his own jazz club. They end up falling in love along the way.
Emma Stone - Mia Dolan
Sebastian Wilder - Ryan Gosling
As of right now, you can watch La La Land with a Netflix subscription. If you don't have Netflix, you can rent the movie on Amazon Prime Video.
A funny thing to note is that this movie didn't have as much dialogue as I remembered. Obviously, it's a musical so a lot of the storyline is driven through songs. Just kind of a funny observation I had. Still, here are some of my favorite quotes from the movie:
What Mia sings when she's in the bathroom at the party.
What Sebastian tells his sister when she's trying to get him to unpack his stuff.
What Sebastian tells Mia when they see each other again at the pool party.
What Sebastian tells Mia about Los Angeles.
Sebastian sings after he meets Mia.
Mia's argument with Sebastian about opening his club.
Mia's audition.
What Mia and Sebastian tell each other after Mia's audition.
*Spoilers for the movie La La Land ahead*
The ending of La La Land has had audiences divided. After Mia's big audition, we fast forward 5 years and realize she is now a famous actress and married to someone else. Her and her husband are on a date night and stumble into Sebastian's jazz club without realizing it. They sit down and after spotting Mia, Sebastian plays her their song. A fantasy scene plays of what would have happened if Mia and Sebastian had stayed together. After the song ends, Mia leaves with her husband, but not before she exchanges a knowing glance with Sebastian.
There are multiple different interpretations of the ending of La La Land. Some people believe it means that sometimes in life you have to sacrifice some dreams for other dreams and others believe that the ending was trying to make the statement that you can stay in a relationship while chasing your dreams - if you're willing for them to look a little different.
The alternate ending where Sebastian and Mia stay together seems to suggest that Sebastian followed Mia to Paris and that they ended up moving in together and having a son. It seems like they live in a more modest home than Mia's in real life and they stumble into a jazz bar that isn't owned by Sebastian. They also look incredibly in love and happy. This to me seems that some of their dreams came true, but not necessarily the dreams they have at the beginning of the movie. Their love was their shared dream.
My interpretation was that in this version Mia didn't become a huge starlet and Sebastian didn't open Seb's, but they were still happy. This dream sequence starts with them correcting all of their mistakes in the movie. Sebastian kisses Mia right away rather than bumping past her, he goes to her play and is the first to congratulate her, etc. It seems like this universe is trying to state that if Mia and Sebastian would have made their relationship the priority the whole time, it could have been a different kind of dream come true, and they would have helped support some of their each others' other dreams along the way.
In the real life version, Sebastian explains to Mia that she needs to go to Paris on her own so she can give the role everything she's got. Presumably, this led to Sebastian working on opening his club. This leads to them achieving their individual dreams in a big way. It also shows them being happy in their respective lives with Mia happily married and famous and Sebastian the owner of a successful club. The glance they exchange shows that their relationship had a significant impact upon their lives either way and that what they shared at one point was special.
What did you guys think of the La La Land ending? It's so frustrating because it's so easy to feel like they could have stayed together and gotten everything they wanted...but who knows???
